FEATURED PROJECT

Wetland Habitat Visitor Attraction near Woking

We were asked by Horsell Common Preservation Society (HCPS) to help them gain planning permission for the redevelopment of a former mushroom production facility on green belt land. The redevelopment of Heather Farm included demolishing previous buildings and hardstanding to create a wetland habitat visitor attraction.

The new building provides a base for HCPS, space for community-based enterprises and a café for visitors to the wetland area and surrounding walks.

How much do architects charge for plans?

The costs of architects’ plans vary depending on the services required and the scope of each project. For example, a single-storey extension will be charged differently to plans for a large commercial property.

Can I design my own house or do I need an architect?

An architect isn’t necessarily a legal requirement however the skills an architect has are hugely beneficial to people looking to create their perfect home or commercial development.

An architect has design down to a science. The skill of an architect is in translating your thoughts onto paper in order to create a bespoke plan that brings your idea to life.

Do architects charge for an initial consultation?

It depends on which architect firm you speak with. At FORM Design Group, we welcome initial enquiries to best understand what you are looking to achieve.

Do I need an architect to draw plans to get planning permission?

There is no legal necessity to have an architect draw plans to secure planning permission. That said, an experienced architect is likely to create a plan that will meet planning requirements set by local councils. Please do call us to discuss your project in more detail if you are unsure.

Can you help me to complete planning applications to secure planning approval?

Yes, we can. We can advise on the best course to take when it comes to drafting and submitting planning applications to give you the best chance of success.

Can FORM Design Group help with project management?

We can. We offer a full range of architectural services, which cover everything from planning to project completion.

What’s the difference between an architect and an architectural designer or technologist?

To call yourself an ‘Architect’ in the UK you must be registered with the Architects Registration Board (ARB), which is there to protect your interests. The professional body requires all practising architects to carry insurance – something you should ask anyone.

If you are considering appointing them.  Members of the RIBA and ARB must adhere to their professional code of conduct.

Architects are generally more ‘design led’ with greater interest, experience and training in the aesthetic and spatial qualities of a project. Whereas Architectural Technologists often just have experience and training in the science and technology of building, e.g. how and why they are constructed in a certain way, using certain materials.

Good architects also understand the science and technology of building, as it’s part of their training, which is more extensive.

Unfortunately, anyone can call themselves an ‘Architectural Designer’ or use some derivation of the term or offer ‘Architectural Services’.  Qualifications and experience are key.
