Whiteley Shopping Centre, Southampton

A planning consent was achieved for the design  of a new shopping centre on the outskirts of Southampton, following the demolition of an old retail centre.

The shopping centre was designed to offer facilities for well-known chain retailers, casual dining outlets, a supermarket and multiplex cinema.

CLIENT:

British Land

LOCATION:

Fareham, Hampshire

PROJECT:

New Shopping Centre

The Challenge

The previous outlet centre was failing commercially and the layout was dated and inflexible.

The new scheme was designed in the wake of the global financial crisis, which meant that keeping the build cost under control and using innovation design with economical forms of construction and materials was of particular significance and importance.

The design also had to satisfy stringent planning expectations.

The Solution

We designed a flexible, open-plan envelope which allows retailers to take small units, and to expand into larger premises as demand increases.

The brief from British Land was to provide an economical form of construction, whilst offering visitors an enjoyable and high-quality experience when they visit the shopping centre.

We specified a cost-effective, renewable cladding system to harmonise the buildings across the site.

The Result

Whiteley Shopping Centre offer visitors an atrractive, spacious environment and is now one of the best-performing retail outlets in the country.
